Long-tongued species, such as the Garden Bumblebee forage from long flowers.

Other flower preferences are size-related. The Buff-tailed Bumblebee (B. terrestris), the UK's largest species, is big, heavy and not very agile. Consequently, it tends to avoid pendulous flowers or small, delicate blooms that can’t take its weight. Instead it likes to visit horizontal or upwards-facing flowers, especially chunky ones that provide a substantial landing platform. Another large species, the Red-tailed Bumblebee (B. lapidarius), also likes horizontal flowers, but prefers species like daisies, where lots of flowers make up a single flower head, as the bee can walk between them.
